Edith Wharton
Edith Wharton was born into an upper class American family on January 24, 1862, in New York. She wrote novels, short stories, and poetry. Her novel, The Age of Innocence, earned her a Pulitzer Prize in 1921. Wharton’s other novels include, The Buccaneers, Ethan Frome, The House of Mirth, and many more.
She lived in Europe, as well as the United States, where she designed her home known as The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts. Her work often underscores the shortcomings of the upper classes and many of her novels have been adapted into film. Wharton died on August 11, 1937, in France where she was buried. She was 75 years old.
